Dental Inlays And Onlays
What are Inlays and Onlays?
Inlays and onlays are restorative methods that are used to fill in damaged areas within the elevated surface of teeth, also called a cusp. When compared to traditional fillings, dental inlaying is preferred because it covers the entire chipped/damaged area of the cusp and is not nearly as expensive as a crown.
If the damaged area is fairly wide and deep, our cosmetic dentists use dental onlays because they are able to expand over one or more of the tooth’s cusps, working much like an incomplete crown that gives more support and physical coverage to your damaged tooth/teeth.
Procedure / Treatment
On the first visit, our experts will evaluate your dental condition to see if dental inlays and onlays will work for your damaged teeth.
Our qualified and experienced cosmetic dentists use dental inlays and onlays to improve damaged or lost teeth. This is especially the case when there are cavities present, where the overall stability of the teeth is compromised, or where there are cracks/breaks in the tooth/teeth enamel that is more prone to bacterial infection.
Dental inlays and onlays appear just like a classical cavity filling, but cover a larger and more vulnerable area. To start, our dentist removes any prior decay or debris from the infected tooth/teeth and takes measurements for the areas that need dental restoration.
Once that is complete the customized inlay or onlay, which is made of porcelain or composite material, is bonded to the shape of your tooth and is blended with your tooth color to make it appear natural. Slight adjustments are made during this procedure to help fit the inlay or onlay perfectly in its place in order to avoid any discomfort later.
After the procedure, it is crucial that you maintain good dental hygiene to avoid any future decay or damage to your teeth. This will keep them healthy so they can support the newly made restorative correction.
